Applications of Differentiation

Optimisation

Earlier in this chapter we discuss the methods of calculating minimum and maximums turning points. We can use this knowledge to work out problems that require us to find the best possible outcome.

Optimisation Example

Greg has a regular cardboard square with the dimensions 30cm x 40cm. Greg plans to cut x cm on each corner to fold them up to create an open box. Find the dimensions of the largest volume of this box and calculate this volume.
